It`s Time to Stop Using Plastic Drinking Straws

This time, i decided to write a blog about something very important.

I had my “Last Plastic Straw moment” in 2017 after receiving a cocktail with a plastic straw at a local bar in Canggu, Bali, Indonesia.

I was in Bali 2 weeks ago for my yoga retreat. I had an amazing time, a great practice and excellent teaching experience. One of the best things about the trip was that unplanned I bumped into a friend of mine from India. We hung out and chatted a lot. One thing that struck me and caught my attention were the drinking straws! We got talking about this and how bad it is for the environment. All of a sudden, I realised what i was doing! Yes, why was i still using straws?

Scientists estimate that, at current rates, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than there are fish. This waste doesn’t ever completely dissolve, and is often mistaken for food by marine creatures. Report after report is emerging of dead animals as large as whales being found with their bellies filled with pieces of plastic trash, large and small.

What can you do? Enjoying your beverages without straws is a small gesture with high impact. When ordering at a restaurant or drive through, or getting a cocktail at your favorite bar, simply say “No straw, please.” Don’t grab a straw from the soda fountain at the convenience store; you can make a notch in the plastic lid to sip from instead. Even better, don’t take a lid at all! That’s just more plastic to end up as waste in a landfill or the ocean.

Plastic straws don’t get recycled. Straws seem like no big deal, because they are so small, but 500 million per day really adds up, especially when you consider that straws do not get recycled! Most are made low quality plastic.

Plastic constitutes 90% of all trash floating in our oceans. I can’t say this enough: We design plastic to last forever but only use it for a minute. How long did you use that straw with lunch today? Maybe a half hour before tossing it in a bin. If your straw was littered on the street and found its way into a storm drain, it would soon be in the ocean, where it would float around indefinitely.

Drinks taste just as good without a straw.

Stop Using Drinking Straws! Save the Oceans! Save the Environment !
